The Love that Abounds in Knowledge

"And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge..." - Philippians 1:9

The word "abound" literally means to overflow. King David once expressed the overflowing love that he felt from the heart of God when he said, "My cup runneth over". (Psalms 23:5) An awesome truth that God has revealed to us through His Word is that He wants His pure, holy, and perfect love to literally overflow out of the lives of His children! The reason this truth is so awesome is because in ourselves we are everything except pure, holy, and perfect! Isaiah the prophet describes our condition perfectly when he wrote, "we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags". (Isaiah 64:6) The apostle Paul told some of his dearest friends that he wanted to see this love abound more and more as they came to a greater knowledge and understanding of the pure righteousness of the Almighty Lord Jesus Christ. When we focus clearly in our heart on the overflowing love that Christ showed for the entire world as His own blood was overflowing on the cross of Calvary we will see that same love flowing out of our own lives and into the lives of lost and hurting people all around us.
